My Grand Canyon Visit

Over spring break, I visited the marvelous Grand Canyon in Arizona. I traveled by car with my two sisters and parents. My dog, Daisy, did not fit in the car so we had to leave her at the doggie daycare. The drive there was so long that I watched the movie "Tintin" so many times, I actually lost count. We went from California to Laughlin, Nevada to Williams, Arizona which is very close to the South Rim of the colossal Grand Canyon.

This is a picture of the gorgeous Grand Canyon

On our first day at the Grand Canyon, we saw the breathtaking sunset . It turned out to be a spectacular time to view the canyon because you could see many beautiful colors, and shadows, which made the whole view unforgettable. You can see what I mean in the next picture.

Grand Canyon almost at sunset

Standing close to the edge of the canyon walls made me feel like I was going to fall in the canyon. My stomach was hurting because I was a little nervous.

Getting a little too close to the edge of the canyon.

After the Grand Canyon experience, we also traveled to Page Arizona, and visited Glenn Canyon which also shares the same river as the Grand Canyon, the Colorado River. We went into the canyon and traveled on a big raft down the river. I also saw the amazing Powell dam, which is second only to the Hoover dam in size. In my next post, I will be sharing some of those great pictures and stories. If you are going to visit Arizona, I highly recommend going to the Grand Canyon for a great experience.

Have you ever visited Arizona, if so have you been to the Grand Canyon?

  1. Dear Alexandra,

What a grand post about this fabulous national park! I, too, have visited the Grand Canyon, and I felt the same way you did when I got close to the edge. Yikes!

I had always seen pictures of the Grand Canyon, but it exceeded my expectation when I saw it in 2008. We hiked a little ways down into the canyon, but I did not go to the bottom. Do you remember what river is at the bottom and is responsible for creating the canyon?

    1. @ Mrs. Yollis,

Thank you for leaving a wonderful comment on my blog. It was grand!

No, I did not hike to the bottom of the canyon. However, I do know that the river at the bottom of the canyon is called the Colorado River.

Did you see any animals when you were there?

      Sincerley,

  2. Dear Alexandra,

I really enjoyed reading your post. When I saw your pictures it also reminded me of my trip over spring break. Did you get to stay long enough to see the sunset? I did. It looked gorgeous and we saw many turkey vultures flying around in groups.

How did you get there, by car, or by airplane? I hope you will visit my blog and leave me a comment!

    1. Dear Sarah,

I too got to stay long enough to see the sunset at the Grand Canyon, and I agree that the sight was gorgeous. Sadly, I did not see any turkey vultures, but we did see some majestic California condors. At first, we could not identify them, but as soon as we saw white on their wings, we knew that they were California condors. My family and I, traveled by car, however we took a day stop in Laughlin ( Loft-lin ), Nevada.

  3. Dear Alexandra
Your post brought back some wonderful memories I have of traveling to the Grand Canyon just over 20 years ago. It was January when we visited, and it was very snowy, making the landscape extremely beautiful.
We didn't get the opportunity to go down into the canyon - that might be a trip in the future!

I wonder if you will ever want to watch the TinTin movie again after all those viewing while you were traveling!

    warm wishes

    1. Dear Mrs. McKenzie,

Thank you for leaving a wonderful comment on my blog! I have heard that you are not allowed to walk down the Grand Canyon when it is snowing. Do you know why? I will probably watch the movie TinTin again because it is the only movie we have for watching on the road.

      Sincerely,
      Alexandra

  4. Dear Alexandra,

I enjoyed reading your post but got a little carried away with the comment as I would most certainly want to visit the Grand Canyon if I was in the US.

    Dear Alexandra,

Wow what a beautiful sunset you got there! I understand why you highly recommend it. The erosion is quite amazing considering it was made only water and wind. I must say the Grand Canyon is very scary at the top of the canyon. As you could see, I agree with you about the nervous, and I am kind of scared of heights.Because of that, I really don't want to go to the Grand Canyon.Would you still recommend it?

Here are some facts about the Grand Canyon:

Almost five million people hike on the Grand Canyon each year. The South Kaibab Trail is 21 miles which sounds really tiring to me.If you plan to go in a vehicle, you will have to drive 137 miles from the South Rim Village to via the Navajo Bridge, a few miles downstream from Lees Ferry, where the Canyon is only 400 feet wide.

    Are you afraid of heights?
What other places did you during spring break?
What other places would you recommend people to go?

    Sincerely,
    ✄ Acacia ᷾

    1. Dear Acacia,

I too have a little fear of heights, but for some strange reason I only got scared when I walked to the end. It is true that about five million people hike down the Grand Canyon each year, in fact, when I walked down parts of it my family and I ran into some people on mules who went down the whole thing.

To answer your questions, I have a little fear of heights. We also went to Loughlin, Nevada. I also recomend people to go to the Glenn Canyon.

  6. Dear Alexandra,

I love your post! I honestly hope I can go to the Grand Canyon one day because of your post. The photo's were truly astonishing! I couldn't believe you went that close to the edge! My stomach would hurt too!

My family and I had to do the same thing your family had to do with Daisy. When we went to Las Vegas, our dog Mishka wouldn't fit in the car and he would be a pain in the but on the four hour drive to Las Vegas.

I don't think I could watch TinTin more than once at the same time. It would give me a headache, although I thourily enjoyed the movie.

Would you go to the Grand Canyon again some time?

    Sincerely,
    M♥a

  7. Dear Alex,
I am really proud of you. You have the skills of a good writer. I am really impressed with the way you manage the English language. I have too been at the Grand Canyon. I lost my speech for a while, when I saw the deepness of that canyon. I really could not understand those dimensions. I spent more than one hour trying to put that context into my brain and finally I had an spiritual experience. When I took the minibus that moves around tourists I involuntarily touched the naked arm of an unknown person with my naked arm. Suddenly I felt that my body went into her body and at the same time felt that her body went into mine. I got scared and I left the bus.

I hope you continue writing in this blog and later you go for the short stories. I congratulate you, you are doing a superb job in this blog.

    God bless you,

    Manuel Aguirre
