My Glen Canyon River Run

After my wonderful trip to the Grand Canyon, we drove to Page, Arizona, to visit the gorgeous Glen Canyon. My family and I took a boat tour of Glen Canyon on the Colorado River.
The color and shape of the canyon walls were absolutely spectacular, because they  were so red and smooth. It looked so much like a painting.  Traveling through Glen Canyon felt like being in a miniature version of Grand Canyon.

(Smooth and red canyon walls)

Our boat was big, blue, and made out of rubber. It held lots of people as you can see in the picture below. Sitting on the boat, felt like I was sitting on a yoga exercise ball. Our guide, T. J., was very entertaining. He told a lot of hilarious jokes, interesting stories, and relevant historical facts. He even played his Navajo flute, and I almost fell asleep to the relaxing Native American music.

Later on, we stopped at a little river bank to eat our lunches. We were allowed to see some petroglyphs (also called rock engravings) made by Native Americans many hundreds of years ago.

(Me going to see the petroglyphs)

To me the petroglyphs looked like drawings of goats on a trail. I was able to stand really close to the carvings, but not close enough to touch them. They do this to protect them from getting damaged.

(These are the petroglyphs)

My favorite part of going to Arizona was going to Glenn Canyon and seeing the petroglyphs, because  I was able to learn a lot and had fun at the same time.

Have you ever been on a boat tour, if so where have you been?
Have you ever visited Glenn Canyon, if so have you seen the petroglyphs?

  1. Dear Alexandra,

What a terrific post about your trip to Glenn Canyon! I have never been to that particular place, but it sure looks pretty.

I like your descriptive writing, and I noticed that you used some great adjectives and verbs. Terrific!

You mentioned that you saw some petroglyphs. I did not see any when I was in Arizona, but I remember that Anthony Reynoso saw some petroglyphs near his house. Do you remember that? I wonder if they looked the same as yours.

How often were you in the boat on your trip?

    Wonderful post!

    1. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Thank you for leaving a spectacular comment on my blog! I did remember that Anthony Reynoso saw some petroglyphs near his house. The petroglypghs near his house looked very different then the petroglyphs in Glenn Canyon. To answer your question, I was in the boat for about four hours.

      Your student,

  2. Alexandra,

I loved your story! Years ago I went to the edge of the Grand Canyon when I was a composer for a dance company. Most of my friends walked all the way down to the water but I stayed at the top and watched the clouds and the shadows on the canyon walls. I also listened to the echoes of my friends' voices.

Sometimes I think about going back some day to ride on the river and see the floor of the canyon. Your pictures and descriptions make me want to visit the Glen Canyon as well! Thank you for sharing your impressions--keep writing!

    All the best,
    Dr. Timony

  3. Alexandra,

How descriptive your writing is! I have only been on canoe trips myself and I have not been lucky enough to visit Glenn Canyon. You have inspired me to take a look and learn more about Glenn Canyon and the petroglyphs!

    Thanks for teaching me!

  4. Hi Alexandra
What a great post about your trip to the Glen Canyon. It sounds like you had an amazing adventure! I have never been to the USA, but would love to visit one day.
I have been on two boat tours. They were both in amphibious vehicles, which travel on both the land and in the water. One trip was in Rotorua in New Zealand and the other was in Surfer's Paradise in Australia. Both were so much fun! It was a great way to see those areas.
Thank you for sharing about your part of the world.Keep up the great writing too!
    Kind Regards
    Mrs Todd

    Dear Alexandra,

I adore your Glen Canyon post! When I went camping I went in a rowboat. I learned that it is in fact hard to row a row boat because you have to push through tons of water. I see that your raft can hold about 20 people and a row boat can hold about 5 people.

Did you sleep in a tent?

    Love,
    Kelly

      Dear Kelly,

We have never ever been in rowboat before, but it sure sounds like fun. You are correct that the rubber raft can hold about 20 people and the rowboat can hold about 5. Atrina thinks that going in a rowboat would be a lot of fun, but she also thinks that it is hard work to manage pushing through the water like you said.

No, Alexandra did not sleep in a tent, but she did sleep in a hotel.

      Sincerely,
      Alexandra and Atrina

    Dear Alexandra,

What a beautiful place! My mom and dad went to college in Arizona.

Once, I went to Costa Rica, and I went tubing. First, we had to hike about a mile to get to the rafts. When we got there, we got on the rafts, and went into a stupendously beautiful cave. In the cave, there were a lot of petroglyphs, too! The water also gleamed sometimes if it hit a certain point.

In the cave, there were a lot of different animals, like bats, little frogs in the water, fish, and many more. I was kind of freaked out because I hate creepy crawly things! Our tour guide was also funny, he told me that if you come at night you can see all the bats fly around the cave. I didn't really want to do that though!

When we were in the rafts, I had to go alone because if there was an adult with me the whole raft would tip over, and that means a face full of frog! Even though there was a lot of slimy things around me, I loved going rafting!

    Have you ever gone rafting?

    Sincerely,
    Sasha♥ ᇗ ᘃ ᲼ ঘ ࡉ ⋍ ⚢ Y

  7. When I was seven years old, my family went on a trip on a paddle wheel boat on the Ohio River. I still remember how much fun we had. I won a hat decorating contest on the boat.

There are many different kinds of boats. It would be fun to go on many different kinds. I have been in canoes, row boats, on a sail boat, a paddle wheel boat, and a motor boat. I have never been on a submarine, a cruise ship, a battleship, or a pirate ship. I think my favorite boats are the ones that I get to paddle (canoes and rowboats).

  8. Dear Holly,

I have never been on a conoe, rowboat, a paddle wheel boat, or a motorboat. I would love to travel down into the depths of the ocean in a submarine.

    Sincerely,
    Alexandra
